SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Fire Department is reminding folks that as we change your clocks to 'spring forward," you also need to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
They also say you should:
- Test smoke alarms monthly and make sure everyone in your home knows the sound it makes.
- Install and maintain smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors according to the manufacturer’s instructions!
According to the San Antonio Fire Department, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths from 2005 through 2009 happened from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that weren't working. Statistics show that when smoke alarms fail, it's usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead and nearly one-quarter of smoke alarm failures are due to dead batteries.
The San Antonio Fire Department has installed more than 10,000 free smoke detectors in homes throughout San Antonio.
If you need one, call the United Way Helpline at 211 and request one.
