SAN ANTONIO - Breaking the cycle of teenage pregnancy has been a challenge the City of San Antonio has faced for years.  Joann Galvan a teenage mom talked about her life as a pregnant teenager. She was 17 years old when her mom found out she was pregnant. Joann says, I did not have the courage to tell her I was pregnant she figured it out on her own.

Twenty years later, Joann's talking about the challenges she faced saying she was determined to make sure her daughter would one day graduate from high school without getting pregnant. It was a goal she and her mom were unable to do.

"We never really talked about who's fault it was I would say because I was allowed a lot of freedom that I made those choices," she explained.

Metro Health Mario Martinez is the Program Manager for Project Worth a city program that encourages teens to put off having sex and having babies too early. Martinez says communicating with your child is key and having the sex talk with them more than once will help them make better choices.

Martinez adds, " It's an ongoing conversation that should start at a very young age."

To help parents Project Worth has put together a free book called "Talking to Your Children about Sex." It's available in both English and Spanish. To obtain or read a copy of the book, click here...

Joann believes her talks with her daughter made all the difference she broke the cycle.  Her daughter is now 20 years old and attends A&M.

like many...im a teen mom. im 26 years old now. i had my first child at 17. but i'll tell you a few things its true...it is all about how your raised cause nothing they teach you in school is gonna stop this. and i do believe that the government is making it way to easy for teens to get pregnant.i dont see how anybody could be proud to be a teen mom. i know im not. i dont regret my daughter..but i still made a very bad choice and if i had some 1 there talk to me about this maybe i wouldnt have been 1. its not about these girls being whores(some are) it mainly because they're uneducated....no not trash either. with 3 girls now(yes all by the same father)b4 people like yoyo2 & joicat start sayin something.lol all i can think of is doing everything in my power for my children not to have the life i did. and yes i do believe having their father and mother together makes all the differnce. EDUCATION STARTS AT HOME!!! and how childish is that anyway? name calling? c'mon people. all these girls are -babies havin babies. dont judge unless u had a similar experience.makes u sound ignorant.

yeah, mike i did...but was smart enough not to get pregnant! Like joicat and gran torino said...the stupid girls in this town are proud of it! guess they are taught in this town the more kids you pop out the more of MY money they get! Close your legs or wrap it up, stupid girls!!!

if this wasn't such a serious subject i would be laughing hysterically. some of you must live in a world different from mine. what we have here are young uneducated trash having babies and they raise their kids the same way. like Gran Torino said, they wear it like a badge of honor. i took care of a baby years ago and the babies mom was 19 yrs old and the baby was her 5th child. no solution for this problems like these

Yoyo- I have no problem with parents teaching their kids about safe sex but to refer to a young girl with sexual urges as a "whore" is heartless. Didn't you ever have sexual urges when you were young?

Bobcat - 2/15/2010 4:27 PM
maybe if more parents would take responsiblity and teach their kids about safe sex and how to keep it in their pants instead of being lazy and leaving it up to the school we might see a difference...

it's blunt and truthful...
