SAN ANTONIO -- A 6-year-old boy riding his bicycle on the sidewalk died Thursday evening, not long after he was hit by a truck.
Neighbors say Brandon Abrams was riding his bike on the sidewalk in the 9300 block of Autumn Sunrise, on the northwest side off Braun Road near Loop 1604.
"When I saw him get hit, I saw him fly up in the air. I was there when he hit the ground. I was there from when it happened and I was talking to him and making sure he had a pulse," cried neighbor Jane Withers.
Brandon's mother did CPR on him before paramedics arrived. He was flown by Airlife to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the 17-year-old driver, identified as Luis Enrique Landin, was intoxicated and didn't have a license. Landin is now facing an intoxication manslaughter charge, according to police.
Witnesses said Landin was speeding and had bottomed out in a dip before he hit the boy. Withers said she confronted Landin.
"I said, 'what were you doing?' He said, 'I dropped my phone and I reached down to get it and then I went up on the curb and that's when I hit him,'" Withers told us.
Withers later set up a memorial, with a teddy bear, candles and flowers late Thursday night. She and other neighbors plan to go door-to-door Friday morning to collect donations to help the family pay for the funeral.
