Tremendous growth northeast of San Antonio means some school boundaries may be rezoned in the Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City school district.

The district is considering rezoning the boundaries for Steele and Clemens high schools, as well as for Dobie and Corbett junior high schools.

District leaders say a boom in growth has led to overcrowding at Steele High School.  The district needs to rezone the boundaries to balance the student populations at Steele and Clemens.

"Clemens which has been our high school for four years, the capacity is 2,100. Right now, they have under 1,400 students," says district spokesperson Rebecca Villarreal.  "So it's being under-utilized.  On the other side of the district, we have Steele which was built for 1,500 and it has 2,100 students."

Villarreal tells News 4 WOAI students in grades 6 through 11 will be grandfathered into their current schools if they choose to stay at their current school.

Two public hearings on the proposed boundaries will be held before the school board votes on February 12th.
