Federal officials are letting Boeing conduct test flights on one of its 787 airplanes.

The test will have restrictions, such as flying in airspace over unpopulated areas. Boeing is trying to determine what may be causing problems with the aircraft's lithium-ion batteries.

Officials around the world grounded 787s last month because of problems like smoke or fire that are believed to be connected to the batteries.
