SAN ANTONIO -- Residents who need assistance with their utilities and weatherization for their homes can now benefit from a new process.

Today, the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) and the Bexar County Department of Community Resources announced a unification of their programs. Now, residents only have to complete one aplication if they apply for the utility payment assistance and weatherization services through the Low Income Household Energy Assistance Program. In the past, residents had to do two separate applications through each agency.
Utility assistance is provided by the Bexar County Department of Community Resources to qualified households in unincorporated Bexar County that have income within the 125 percent of the Poverty Income Guideline set by the Federal government. Certain groups are given priority for assistance including:

  • the elderly (60 years or older)
  • people with disablities (unable to engage in substantial employment for a period of 12 months or longer)
  • families with children 5 years of age or younger

AACOG provides the Weatherization Assistance Program to assist qualified applicants who have high energy consumption and evaluating their residence to see what, if any, energy efficiency measures could reduce the amount of energy consumed. Those who qualify can receive whole house air sealing, water conservation devices, energy efficient appliances or repair and replacement of heating and cooling systems.

If you're in one of the priority groups, you can contact the Bexar County Utility Assistance and request an application. However, if you are in danger of having your electricity disconnected, the county recommends to first contact CPS Energy to make pay arrangements by calling 210-353-2222.
