SAN ANTONIO – Today we wrap up our “Best of San Antonio” Fiesta with the announcement of San Antonio’s favorite Fiesta medal.
The runaway winner is the 2011 Viva Fiesta medal. Congratulations to designer David Durbin.
“I've been designing all year since September, and I decided to design my own. And this is what I got. It became a very popular design this year,” said Durbin as he accepted his Best of San Antonio reward. “Everywhere I went everybody wanted one after they saw it.”
Medals are an essential part of Fiesta. Organizations all across town create medals to sell or give away, with the goal being to collect as many as you can. King Antonio XLIX is credited with starting the tradition in 1971 when he put 200 royal coins on ribbons and distributed them at Fiesta events. If you have an opportunity to shake hands with Fiesta royalty or do the Happy Dance for Cleto, you may be lucky enough to have a medal slide into your palm.
