A local organization is bringing supplies and hope to area teachers.
Spare Parts was founded last year in reaction to state budget cuts on arts education. Founder Mandy Cantu saw the need and partnered with the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center to provide art teachers and artists with free supplies.
"Artists can take things that we think are trash and make amazing artwork from it," Cantu said. "Why not be a connector? Why not bridge the folks that have the stuff, the agencies that do have all these rich resources and connect them to our teachers in San Antonio and our creative community?"
Today,
Spare Parts hosted a giveaway and provided fabric samples, magazines, plastic items, paper and shelving supplies to the twenty guests that arrived. Many included middle school and high school art teachers that often teach up to 500 students a day.
The organization has been using the Guadalupe Center for the past year, but are currently looking for a new space to work out of.
