SAN ANTONIO -- A 10-week-old baby is home from the hospital Monday night after he was attacked by a pit bull Saturday night, his mother said.
Rashanba Barber said the attack happened when the family had just arrived home on Candlewind, which is off Foster Road on the northeast side.
"I just ran and jumped in the truck and my brother jumped in after me and the dog jumped in the truck with us. When I jumped out, it jumped out after us and just came at us," she said.
Several family members stood on top of cars to escape the charging dog, and Rashanba said she tried to run with her baby Jah'nell, but the dog quickly caught them.
"He fell to the street and the dog was on top of him," she said. "I just blanked out. I couldn't do anything but scream and holler and cry for anybody to help me. I was trying to flag down any car, anything. Luckily, my mom and some total stranger got the dog."
She worried her son was "gone" because he wasn't responsive. He was rushed to University Hospital, where doctors said he suffered internal bruising and was bitten on his face and back. Rashanba said he suffered numerous shots throughout his stay.
"I just can't stop thanking God because I'm happy he's alive," she said.
This attack is the third dog bite News 4 WOAI has reported within the last week. If you live in the city or within Bexar County and you feel threatened by a dog in your neighborhood, you can fill out a dangerous dog affidavit and Animal Care Services will investigate. The dog who bit Jah'nell is quarantined and ACS is investigating. Rashanba says she had never seen the pit bull before and was terrified of dogs prior to the attack.
