SAN ANTONIO -- A 10-week-old baby is home from the hospital Monday night after he was attacked by a pit bull Saturday night, his mother said.

Rashanba Barber said the attack happened when the family had just arrived home on Candlewind, which is off Foster Road on the northeast side.

"I just ran and jumped in the truck and my brother jumped in after me and the dog jumped in the truck with us. When I jumped out, it jumped out after us and just came at us," she said.

Several family members stood on top of cars to escape the charging dog, and Rashanba said she tried to run with her baby Jah'nell, but the dog quickly caught them.

"He fell to the street and the dog was on top of him," she said.  "I just blanked out. I couldn't do anything but scream and holler and cry for anybody to help me. I was trying to flag down any car, anything. Luckily, my mom and some total stranger got the dog."

She worried her son was "gone" because he wasn't responsive. He was rushed to University Hospital, where doctors said he suffered internal bruising and was bitten on his face and back.  Rashanba said he suffered numerous shots throughout his stay.

"I just can't stop thanking God because I'm happy he's alive," she said.

This attack is the third dog bite News 4 WOAI has reported within the last week.  If you live in the city or within Bexar County and you feel threatened by a dog in your neighborhood, you can fill out a dangerous dog affidavit and Animal Care Services will investigate. The dog who bit Jah'nell is quarantined and ACS is investigating. Rashanba says she had never seen the pit bull before and was terrified of dogs prior to the attack.

Looks like it's time to put down a few dogs and the moron owners.

And you, Freehole, are a moron! As I said before, it is my opinion, and as an american, that actually works and pays taxes, not someone that collects a welfare check or foodstamps every month....I am entitled to my opinion. Whether you like it or not. Carry on with your nonsense name calling, proves what I think of you is true.

Its hard to say what a mother will do in a situation like that. You only have a split second to make a decision. My friend was attacked by a roaming pitbull while walking her baby in a stroller about four years ago. She said when the dog ran toward her, she couldnt outrun him so she knocked over her stoller and turned it upside down to cover the baby. The dog attacked her and she was rescued by a man, but she swears if she didnt cover the baby the dog would have bit the baby. I have to hand it to her, I dont know if I would've thought of that.

MrSomeKind-of-Megde...what an idiotic comment. And you insist and insist after people telling you to focus on the important issues. In any case, if the baby was strapped on a stroller or carrier, maybe that would making more of a sitting duck, if possible, to the murderous dog's attack. There's only one excuse for a (derailed) train of thought like yours: You are a murderous pitbull lover yourself.

At 10 weeks old, that baby should still be in a carrier, not a car seat. Like my opinion or not, it is still my opinion. My child was never unstrapped from his carrier until he was safely in the house. This is a tragedy, however, I still feel the parents could have prevented the child from being hurt. Period. My opinion.

Again sue the pants off the owner of the dog. If you can find him of course. Teach him a lesson. Luckily the baby is going to be ok, but it could EASILY have been way worse.

For those commenting on why the baby was unstrapped...she was being taken out of the car seat. Unless it's one of those carriers that you take in and out of the car, she was probably lifting the baby out of the seat to carry inside. People do carry babies in arms still. Don't blame the mother for the attack. Blame the dog's owner...and then kill the dog. If it's vicious, there is no turning it back.
