Lights, Cameras, Action! Get ready folks, we've got a new fashion designer in town! How cool is it to MAKE your own prom dress? That's what these girls are doing in their Apparel Design Class. They not only compete, but they can take an order! Interested in checking them out on the runway? There's a fashion show at Jefferson High School on May 1st.
The Jefferson fashion program has been in existence for over 9 years. In those years, students have participated in a number of different projects and the program has developed into a magnet school for any Bexar County student wishing to get a head start on a career in fashion.
In recent years, the students have participated in Fashion Group International's Career day in Houston, Texas. Last year, student Cynthia Chavez won a $300 scholarship for her hand-beaded pink evening gown.
Jefferson students have also excelled in the Fiber Artists of San Antonio Art To Wear student design contest each of the three years of competition. Jefferson students swept all the awards in the first year, placed 6 out of 7 spots in the second year and took 2 out of 7 spots this year with over 150 design entries.
The school was also selected for a 3 year collaboration with the San Antonio Museum of Art to create garments based on art pieces in their permanent collection. Students used only paintings and art pieces to design and create the costumes.
Jefferson is one of the few schools that has its costumes made in-house by students. Jefferson fashion students have undertaken this task each year for the last 8 years. Advanced students also hold a boutique sale each December in which they market and sell their own unique clothing and accessory pieces. The program ends each year with a fashion show featuring more than 75 of the student's creations.
The Jefferson fashion program is headed by Sandy Starr.
Rope & Dance
This was A LOT harder than it looked. These girls had skill to pick up a rope, twirl it around and do a dance routine at the same time. When Delaine tried it, she practiced and practiced and still couldn't get it down! We ended up having to improvise. We let these experts twirl the rope and we just did our thing.
Girls Softball
It's the one event that takes place outside, and it starts to rain. We had to move things inside the gym. In here, we were able to set up a diamond field and get a little mini game going. Andie Rodriguez, their ALL STATE champ, was known for throwing strikes, so when we asked her to toss one to Delaine, it was too fast! It took 4 to 5 takes just to get Delaine to hit one of her balls!
