SAN ANTONIO -- The "4 WOAI Holiday Heroes" blood drive is Friday, June 26th.
News 4 WOAI 's Leslie Bohl Jones found out how the heat, of all things, could play a roll.
With the record-setting heat we are experiencing right now, we are suppose to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. That's even more important if you plan to donate blood.
Those participating in the 4 WOAI Holiday Heroes blood drive will be inside an air conditioned building and will be given juice and snacks afterward. And there is a good reason for that.
According to experts at the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center, there are some things you need to do after giving the gift of life. You should avoid strenuous actitives or lifting for at least 6 hours after donating blood. You also need to drink plenty of fluids like water or juice for the 24 hours following donating blood, and, during that time, avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.
Your body will replenish the blood you donate within 24 hours.
