SAN ANTONIO -- Every month, News 4 WOAI shows you a San Antonian who has been chosen to receive the prestigious Jefferson Award. Started nearly 40 years ago, the national award program recognizes the best in public service.
Once a year, one of the monthly winners is selected to go to Washington, D.C. for national recognition. News 4 WOAI Television General Manager Jackie Rutledge announced the that winner Wednesday during a luncheon honoring all of the winners. Her name is Isabel Chapman.
Chapman is a realtor but started a small relief effort to help people in her hometown in Mexico deal with devastating flooding. Her efforts snowballed into a huge project in which 18 tons of food, water, and supplies were collected.
"I never expected it. I think every single one who was in the room with us today, they should go," Chapman told us. "And I'm thinking I'm just the face for the all good people that's in San Antonio."
"San Antonio is such a warm place," Rutledge said. "There are so many good things that are happening. And we wanted to highlight some of those things. To show how we have wonderful people in our community making a difference every day in people's lives."
She's speechless!
