There are a variety of HDTV receivers you can buy that will allow you to watch local HD broadcasts in San Antonio without having to subscribe to cable or satellite service. Most electronics retailers sell set-top-box style HD receivers that hook-up to your TV much like a cable box or VCR. For example, Wal-Mart has HDTV receivers starting at just under $200. While these receivers offer different options and services, they are all capable of receiving local HD signals. You will also need an antenna. Most viewers living within the San Antonio city limits should be able to receive the HD signals with a simple indoor antenna. People living in outlying areas may need an outdoor antenna. Ask your salesperson which antenna is right for you.
One of the great things about owning a set-top-box style HDTV receiver is that it allows you to receive many new free channels being broadcast digitally over our local airwaves, including News 4 WOAI Weather Plus, which is a full-time local weather station. The local PBS station currently broadcasts four different channels – all for free.
And here’s something else a lot of people don’t realize: you can hook-up an HDTV receiver to your regular old TV. The picture won’t be in true HD, but it will look a lot better than the regular signal you’re used to seeing, and you can also watch the new digital channels, including News 4 WOAI Weather Plus, for free.
The future is here with HDTV.
If you have a question about receiving News 4 WOAI's digital signal, feel free to send an e-mail to our Engineering department.
