Unlike many Mexican restaurants whose menu mainstays include Aztec-inspired staples from Central Mexico like enchiladas and tamales, El Papalote Taco & Grill focuses on the grilled cuisine that originated in Northern Mexico and gained popularity among Mexican and Tejano ranching communities throughout history. Traditional enchiladas, mole and carne guisada are nowhere to be found at El Papalote. Rather, grilled meats flavored with dry seasonings, fresh vegetables and imported Mexican cheeses define its cuisine.

Tacos are the most popular menu option at El Papalote, including beef, chicken and shrimp. Each taco selection includes a specified tortilla, but guests are welcome to choose flour, corn or a combination. All tacos are available in 2- and 3-taco plates, and are served with rice, your choice of secret-recipe charro or refried beans, and a mix of bell peppers, onions and seasoned fries, a customer favorite in Mexico and San Antonio. However, if guests prefer other sides such as mashed potatoes, onion rings, corn on the cob or seasoned mushrooms, substitutions may be made.

In addition to its vast array of tacos, El Papalote also specializes in beef and chicken fajitas, queso flameado, rib-eye and sirloin steaks, and steak/chicken sandwiches. A kids' menu is also available.

El Papalote is a well-established franchise in Northern Mexico. To complement its ranch-style menu, in each of its restaurants El Papalote's rustic décor features limestone walls, pine wood accents, stained concrete floors and dark wooden furniture simple in design yet sturdy in structure.

A full bar serves everything from margaritas and other frozen drinks to bottled and draft beer, domestic and imported wines, and a range of liquors, including a dozen premium Mexican tequilas. Happy Hour is all day Sunday and Monday, as well as from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Currently, $2.50 drafts are offered during Happy Hour, and the selection includes Negra Modelo, Blue Moon, Sam Adams, Alamo, Shiner, Coors Light, Miller Light and XX.

Food good. WORSE SERVICE EVER!!!!!!! this was our first visit. After being seated we waited for 20 minutes & no waiter ever showed up. So we mention to the hostess & a waiter there is like I'll take care of you, he gets our food order & disappears to never be seen again until he brought the food. Another waiter which seems to be our waiter asks have you been helped after 40 minutes of us being seated. We say we need water to drink. He says ok, again not to be seen for another 20 minutes after we were half way thru our meal. By this time he bumps into the other waiter & our water is spilled. Both get upset & no one returns with our drinks. Finally we get up, upset ready to leave. Then the waiter shows up just to give us the bill. We asked for a manager 2x & one never showed up. We pay & leave. I call to the restaurant wanting to speak to a manager & metion our problem & he says Oh yeah you were 4 adults & 2 children I know what the problem was. So I say OH so you know who we were & you never went & he changed it to OH I think I might remember. He then asked us to go back in to make it right so we decided OK second chance. The service was way better, & although again we asked for the manager 2x's to let him know we were there to make it right. He never once showed his face nor apologized. The food was good but not worth lack of customer service on behalf of the manager & the staff the first time around.
