Maureen JohnsonSAN ANTONIO - In TV news, reporters sometimes have to conduct ‘Man on the Street’ interviews (we call them MOS interviews). These can either be a lot of fun or a complete pain because they involve asking random people on the street a random question, therefore rejection is bound to happen!
A woman was just given five years probation
for spanking her 2-year-old daughter on the behind in Corpus Christi. The assignments editor asked me to venture downtown to ask my fellow San Antonians their opinions on spanking, and if it should be punishable by law.
“Is that the good spanking or the bad spanking? Because for the most part, it's all good to me," joked Charles, the photojournalist who was assigned to shoot with me.
Although this is a serious issue, randomly bringing up the subject of spanking to complete strangers was a bit hysterical. We interviewed about seven people on the subject and for the most part, SA believes that spanking a child is a proper form of discipline.
Personally, if I had children, I would try to resort to other forms of discipline such as timeout before spanking. I think a young child could easily associate spanking with hitting and violence.
Let’s get real. Spanking a 2-year-old is completely unnecessary because they are much too young to know any better. What do you think? Let me know in the comments section below…
