Last Wednesday I was fortunate enough to have lunch with CyberBob at Armadillos. The conversation was scintillating. C-Bob (as I call him to sound hip) explained: who really killed Kennedy, how to get over 100 mph in my vehicle just by using something I already have in my medicine cabinet, and how the key to peace in the Middle East is contained in the Disney movie “The Aristocats.” But it didn’t get interesting until we began talking about the best burger in town.
Now, I used to host the afternoon drive show on KLUP when it was a music station. Between spinning tunes by Bobby Darin, Sinatra, Bennett, and others, we would have something I called Glick’s Picks (I have to spell it that way so it rhymes). It was very popular. Listeners would call in with their favorite place to get a particular food item.
I said it was popular; I didn’t say it was original. However, what made it original is that we talked, not only about present day restaurants, but also about past restaurants. With this opportunity given to me by WOAI, I’ll reviving Glick’s Picks. We’ll try and do it every week. Today’s topic: Burgers!
Seriously, is there anything better than a good burger? It’s almost a piece of art. Juicy flavorful fresh ground meat gently pressed in a patty. Then lovingly seasoned. Fried or grilled to perfection. And finally, tenderly nestled snuggly in a bun. And of course served with… yeah right, you think I’m going walk into that culinary minefield?
The Toppings. What you choose to put on a burger is an expression of your personality. The burger is the canvas and the condiments your paint. Mustard? Mayonnaise? Ketchup? Cheese or No Cheese? Chili? Bacon? People take their condiments very seriously. Couples have broken up over how a burger should be made. Rumor has it that many “In-The-Know” believe the next great war will begin over an argument about whether grilled onions are better than raw onions.
Back to Glick’s Picks. Now, here’s how I’m going to start this. In order to stay safe, I’m going to tell you three of my favorite burgers in town. Burgers I can’t live without. This is only interesting if you participate. Share your favorites. Past and Present.
