SAN ANTONIO -- Mayor Julián Castro received pretty high marks in a recently published New York Times article.

Some comments made by the mayor's mother, however, have stirred up a bit of controversy. Rosie Castro told the writer of the article, Zev Chavets, she wasn't too fond of the Alamo.

"They used to take us there when we were schoolchildren," she told me. "They told us how glorious that battle was. When I grew up I learned that the 'heroes' of the Alamo were a bunch of drunks and crooks and slaveholding imperialists who conquered land that didn't belong to them. But as a little girl I got the message - we were losers. I can truly say that I hate that place and everything it stands for."

The Mayor has stated he does not share his mother's opinion of the Alamo. But some people believe something more needs to be said.

The mayor's mother is about the most racist of a public official I've heard about in a long time. It's not funny what she said and I'm not happy that Beamer and DeLaine found it humorous by saying how parents can be embarrassing at times. This is beyond embarrassing. If she feels that way, she also brought up her children to be racists. Let her go back to Mexico and let her sing the praises of Santa Ana OVER THERE AND NOT HERE IN THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS!!!!!!!!

They need to pack the mayors' "BROWN OLD LADY" on a bus and bring her to the river at the boarder and let her swim back across. It's people like this that are causing most of the racist hate in this country. Mama Mexican thinks she owns the city because of her son.

It is sad that she does not consider herself a Texan. All the Texans I know are proud of our history and heritage, and our cultural heritage is one and undivided. I would blame her teachers for making her feel "second class". I am a 12th generation Texan of mixed Hispanic, German, and Europeans and proud of my ancestors here.

This is what I know about Santa Anna. He married twice. His second wife was 15 yrs. old. In his will he left land to 7 children that he fathered with different women. (none of whom he married). While captured in Texas after the Battle of the Alamo, the U.S. Minister to Mexico, Joel Poinsett had this to say about Santa Anna;"he got what he deserved." Santa Anna hearing this said. " Tell Mr. Poinsett that this is very true. that I threw up my cap for liberty with great ardor but very soon found folly of it. 100 years from now my people will not be fit for liberty. They do not know what it is. unenlightened as they are and under the inflence of Catholic clergy a despotism is the proper government for them. But, that is no reason why it should not be a wise and virtuous one". So, Santa Anna was a drunk and loved his women and he was a dictator. So, what made him any better than the drunks, horse theives, and outlaws that fought for the alamo? If Santa Anna didn't believe in what he fought for, or the people he fought for. Why would you care one way or the other about The Alamo ? I am proud of who fought at the Alamo. The horse theives, drunks, and outlaws is what gave us our independent spirit and our willingness to fight the good fight when necessary. That's what Texas is. A proud state ready to fight anyone who wants to take away our freedom. That what the United States use to be until everyone became "P.C." and didn't want to hurt anyones feelings. Including our enemy. We all need to "Remember the Alamo" and take back our Country. And put it in the hands of Men and Women who still believe in "The Alamo" and what it stands for.

I have read all the previous comments. I am hispanic and I'm a PROUD Texan. Mrs. Castro's view is from the other side. There were many hispanics fighting along side with the Alamo defenders and fellow Texicans to make Texas a REPUBLIC. Mrs. Castro was wrong for expressing her view in such a manner. I agree with the other's comments. Mrs Castro should go back to Mexico. "Remember the Alamo" is a strong emotional feeling among true Texans. We need to honor and remember these fallen heros. And anybody who disagrees need to get the hell out of Texas. God Bless Texas.

I think Mayor Castros mother should be sent back to Mexico. If she is an American, then she owes Americans an apology. She is definately a RACIST! Any one that would make those kind of statements now, at this time in History, needs only to go back to their home country. Let's see if MS. Castro would get the same benefits over there! I say shame on her, and she needs to publicly apologize for those RASCIST comments!

Look, what's happened, happened. No one is going to give Texas back to Mexico. But white Texans need to own up to the facts. The Texas revolution was a land grab in disguise. The Mexican people were duped into thinking the Texians were fighting to restore the constitution of 1812.Once the Mexican Army was defeated,a wave of the worst that America had to offer invaded Texas. For the next 50 years every major land grant belonging to Mexicans wound up in the hands of the white invaders.Begining with the fall of the Alamo,Mexicans were seen as the enemy and as second class citizens and this continued into the twentieth century. When you read the history with an open mind you see that Mexican descendents don't have alot to cheer about.Texas is a great state but it's even greater when you accept the many obstacles that had to be conquered to make it so. 5th gen Txn

Mrs. Castro has done her research on the Alamo. She is correct in what she said about some of the well known defenders. As children we too were taught about the great white lie about the defenders of the Alamo when in fact, some of the known hero's came to Texas to escape the law and family responsibilities facing them here in The United States. Let's remember, Texas at that time was Mexico, and they became Mexican citizens to live here. One of the reasons for Texas independence was that Mexico did not believe in slavery, and Mexico was no longer wanting people from the USA settling here because of that. The Alamo had no military significance at the time, and they were ordered to leave by Sam Houston but decided to stay. The Battle of the Alamo was male testosterone at it's best. Santa Ana wanted revenge for his brother-in-law General Cos being assailed by Texian forces under Stephen F. Austin. Now before I get ugly responses, yes I'm glad Texas won it's independence from Mexico. But for some of you telling Mrs. Castro that she should go back to Mexico, her family like mine NEVER CROSSED THE BORDER, it crossed us. My family on my mothers side WAS from here. A great read that we used in college for my Texas History class was written by Jose Enrique de la Pena called "The de la Pena Files". He was not a sympathizer of Santa Ana, but kept one of the best detail accounts on the aftermath and what led up to the battle.
