SAN ANTONIO - As you may know, we lost Pastor E. Thurman Walker last year after a bout with cancer. As Pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church, he was a civil rights and social action visionary with a dedication to those in need on San Antonio's Eastside.

His final project was a school that would be a safe haven for boys of excellence; those who want to pursue academic excellence and steer clear of the tough streets and schools that can be both a distraction and danger. Too many times, kids who were outstanding elementary students were pulled in a negative direction during the impressionable middle school grades. Pastor Walker's wife Joangela is continuing his vision with the start of the WillBE Academy (Walker Institute for Learning and Leadership for Boys of Excellence).

Please Join Avery Johnson and me on August 20 at Community Bible Church as we host a benefit concert with 8-time Grammy nominee and saxophone legend KIRK WHALUM. Whalum has been a South Texas favorite for over 25 years and his high energy band is sure to move and inspire you. The Opening act will be the combined choirs of CBC and Antioch. Thanks to the Antioch Baptist Church, The Harvey Najim Family Foundation, Community Bible Church, CPS Energy and the CCSA we are well on our way to a remarkable night.

Tickets are $35 for General Admission and $75 Reserved which includes a CD and private reception. They are available at ticketweb.com. Also, if you have any interest in a corporate sponsorship or helping the WILLBE Academy further, you can contact me directly at DonHarris@woaitv.com.

Pastor Walker was a great friend and special person. We hope that his legacy will live on through the young lives that will be touched by this school. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the late Pastor’s WillBe Academy.
