I’m not really sure why, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve gotten a haircut. It’s not like I really wanted long hair. I guess I was just too lazy to get it cut. Pretty soon everybody here at work was calling me ‘mountain man,’ my wife said I looked like the guy from Amityville Horror, and small children would run away crying as I approached.
I guess Living Show producer Monica had had enough. She didn’t want some Ted Kaczynski look-alike coming on her show anymore. So a few days ago she said, “Bob, we’re going to shoot you getting a haircut. Okay?” She was shaking her head, “Yes” with a threatening look on her face. One of the first things you learn working on the Living Show is that Monica is as sweet as honey – until you make her mad.
So I agreed.
What I didn’t realized was that I was going to a salon -- ME Salon just off Camp Bullis & Tejas Trail on the far north side just off IH-10. I’d never been to a salon, and had my doubts about the whole experience. It seemed way to ‘girlie’ to me. I’ve never spent more than a few minutes at one of these $5 places.
What I didn’t realize is that the people over at ME Salon are maybe the coolest people in the world. Everyone makes you feel so comfortable. It’s like every single person at the salon loves their job.
Then there’s Raluca. She was the one who took care of me. Raluca is my ‘stylist.’ She was sweet the entire time and made me feel completely comfortable. She’s Romanian, but speaks the language better than I do. Her life story is amazing.
First, she talked me out of getting a mullet. I thought it was a great idea, but she convinced me that I’m an idiot (didn’t take long). Then she talked to me for a while to see what kind of haircut I needed to match my personality and lifestyle. It quickly became apparent to her that I spent zero time on my hair, so she gave me a style that requires zero maintenance. I don’t even have to comb it when I get out of the shower!

But let me tell you the best part about getting your hair cut at a salon --- they shampoo your hair and massage your scalp. That right there is worth the price of admission.
