Controversial coach Gary Durbon has been reassigned to a different job after an audit into missing football funds was released. I spoke to the former South San athletic director on the phone shortly after he got the news of his job reassignment.
He told me he saw this coming a mile away when board members Wednesday night gave the interim superintendent permission to reassign employees in the wake of this audit into thousands of dollars in missing football funds.
Durbon told me he has now been reassigned to a position as PE teacher at the district's alternative school. But he says what hurts even more is that he's also been stripped of his duties as head basketball coach.
Gary told me his attorney would speak for him on camera and here's what he had to say when I asked about the audit and job transfer...
“He's never counted a dime of that money. He doesn't have access to that money. Before he was even athletic director there was a person in charge of that, and a procedure to follow and he was always told let those people do what they do. And that's what he's done. So he's never had a hand in that money," said attorney Jerry Hernandez.
Durbon and his attorney both call this retaliation.
Durbon is suing two board members for defamation for recommending he be investigated for allegedly viewing porn on his district computer.
Those I've spoken to at the district insist the audit was only requested to answer questions about where the funds were going.
Several other athletic department employees were also reassigned to other jobs, including Durbon's two secretaries and several maintenance workers.
