SAN ANTONIO - District 7 Councilman Cris Medina tells me he's been hearing complaints from ratepayers outraged at a $410,000 bonus given to CPS Energy's CEO Doyle Beneby for meeting performance goals.

“The sentiments that I've gotten from my community, and from my perspective, is they are excessive, says Medina. "And at what point does it stop, or at what point do we continue to pay out."

Medina says he thinks Beneby is doing a great job, but wants council to step in and get answers. “CPS is a public utility and they report to the council. I think it's important we have a say in the discussion," says Medina.

CPS Energy hired a consultant to look at how it compensates employees compared to other utilities after I reported it recently gave $16 Million in bonuses to employees - but the study is not done yet.

This is another example of the disconnect between the Board of Trustee's / CEO of CPS Energy and the rate payers. If Benneby is rewarded for wastful spending on lavish meals and excessive bar tabs, we as rate payers are in trouble. Benneby has had several negative encounters with the media that puts a black-eye on the Utility and to reward this behavior is just wrong. If you were to look at the level of bonuses given across the board, the percentages don't add up. The CEO and his cronies in the upper level of CPS Enegy are collecting their bonus's on the backs of the men and women in the field. It would seem that the fair amount of bonus awarded the CEO and other members of upper management should be inline with the level of bonus that the men and women actualy performing the work to keep the lights on receive. We as rate payers need to remember, the Board of Turstee's and the CEO might run CPS Energy, but we own it!

133% bonus for CPS CEO and his board members, and 2% bonus for everybody else...that is just wrong.

Just show me on CPS CEO's contract where we own him a 410,000 dollars bonus for a 112 jobs. We know he cannot balance his budget because CPS says they going raise the rates already.

There is so much government corruption everywhere, that it has become the norm, and the mayor don't even have a clue that there is a problem.

Whatever happened to the term 'civil servant'? This bonus is about as stupid as giving Obama a bonus for killing Osama. In reality neither person deserves much credit as boots on the grown have done all the planning and grunt work. Those bonuses should be given back to the people in the form of rebates. If they have that much money to deal out then they are charging rate payers too much!!!!!!!!

A bonus of this size in SA is just excessive. However the salary for the men and women who do the down and dirty work is terrible. I hope that the study brings that injustice to light.

CPS has already said they will be asking for a rate increase, sure doesn't make sense to give this big of a bonus and then ask for an increase. ALSO, A few weeks ago he stated that he would turn down a raise for this year, i'm thinking he already knew the bonus was coming so didnt need a raise.

Those 'bonuses' were given in lieu of a cost of living adjustment. And CPS Energy answers to the Board NOT to the City Council, and there is a REASON for that; City Council couldn't run a hot dog stand successfully, even Cris Medina is reacting to his constituents who are ill-informed, and disgruntled that they even have to pay for electricity to begin with. The reason CPS Energy is so successful at keeping rates low, is that the City DOESN'T run it. Once the politicians start trying to get their hands on the goose that lays golden eggs, they'll cut it open to try to get the gold all at once.
