Have a close look at the image attached to this blog entry. You’re looking at a sketch painting by local artist Jacqui von Honts. I spotted this in one of the SA Airport’s display galleries around 1990, and appreciated it immediately. I made a point to call Jacqui, and she invited me to her studio to purchase a print, and I enjoyed meeting her. We seemed to be kindred spirits regarding the work’s message. It’s been on display in my home for many years.
It’s message, or course, is different for all who view it. I see it as a great leveling of the different political, spiritual and national banners we follow… a view that no matter your affiliation, personal priority or nationality, you’re equal to everyone else. And that appealed to me a great deal many years ago, and it still does, but only to a point now. Particularly, the juxtaposition of the Israeli flag with the Nazi swastika is something I’m less and less comfortable having displayed in my home. (The Nazi’s appropriation of the swastika from an ancient symbol of spiritual balance and luck into an internationally recognized symbol of hatred is a whole other bloggo-rant)
This is a simple blog entry… I want to hear what others think of this piece. Fire away.
