SAN ANTONIO - Fiesta flare is a must for any Fiesta event.
Medals are an essential part of Fiesta. Organizations all across town create medals to sell or give away, with the goal being to collect as many as you can. King Antonio XLIX is credited with starting the tradition in 1971 when he put 200 royal coins on ribbons and distributed them at Fiesta events. If you have an opportunity to shake hands with Fiesta royalty or do the Happy Dance for Cleto, you may be lucky enough to have a medal slide into your palm.
We asked and you responded with over 51,000 votes. It was so close! But in the end UTSA wins best Fiesta medal with more than 21,000 votes.
UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo designed the medal that reads "We Are UTSA." The medal winner received 21,275 votes. Dr. Romo credits the student body for the big win.
“Behind me are some of the people who are the force of this victory because they got to vote and talked to others to get them to vote -- and this makes our campus visible and great. Thank you for being here!” said Dr. Romo in front of a courtyard full of UTSA students.
Our Cleto Rodriguez was a little upset he wasn't the victor. He says his "Where's Cleto?” medal is the season's hottest trend.
