SAN ANTONIO - Forget the fruitcake and nix the nog. In San Antonio it wouldn't be Christmas without tamales. We line up to order — or make — Christmas Eve tamales.

So who makes the best tamales in San Antonio? We asked for your nominations, and here are the top four...

Ruben's Homemade Tamales

1807 Rigsby Ave

B&B Tamales

866 West Mayfield Blvd

Tellez Tamales

1737 South General McMullen Drive

Delicious Tamales

1330 Culebra

But there can be only one winner. WOAI.com users picked Tellez Tamales.

“Thank you San Antonio! Thank You to WOAI. Thank you to everybody! I'm going to cherish this for a very long time. Thanks a lot,” said Luis Tellez , owner of Tellez Tamales. “Everybody knows how to make tamales. My wife was the one that started it all.”

For 37 years the Tellez Family has prepared thousands of tamales for the Christmas season.

“We sell the traditional pork and pork and jalapeño, chicken,” said Tellez.

Located on General McMullen, the family brings smiles to San Antonio faces and takes orders from as far as Houston and Corpus.

Congratulations, WOAI voters. This is the first time you got something right! Granted, there's nothing that can top homemade tamales made by expert tamale cooks who know what they're doing, but Tellez comes close. I've been to the newer location on Bandera and Seneca in Leon Valley, which makes Tellez that much more accessible to a larger consumer base. What's also impressed me are their corn and flour tortillas and their salsas, which are incredible. So well done, Tellez. You impressed me, and I'm usually a rather hard sell.

Update to my previous post, I tried Tellez last Friday 12/16 and they are good tamalez. The meat is seasoned just right. Only thing I noticed is they don't use the red dry chile peppers to give it coloring and that unique flavor like my mom use to make. But, other than that, I'll be going back, best ones I've tried. Tellez, you got my business!

Been loving Tellez for many years. They're so good my arteries start clogging just by walking by. They have the best tamales and barbacoa that I've ever had.
