We caught up with the owner of a barbecue place that serves the best brisket in town.

“Thank you to the voters -- and come see us and get some good brisket!” said Ed's Smok-N-Q owner Ed Ashford.

So what make’s Ed’s brisket so special?

“It’s mesquite smoked,” explains Ashford. “It takes being consistent – and time.”

This Army Veteran and his family have been serving up their delicious BBQ since 2008.

“I always wanted to do it after retiring from the military, and this is what I’ve been doing ever since. My wife is with me on it. I show them how to take their time and do it the RIGHT way.”

Ed's Smok-N-Q is located on South W.W.White between Houston Street and MLK.

All the negative aspects of this story and restaurant are clearly ObamasFault. Any positives must be G.W.B or any elephant

After reading about this place, decided to go check them out Sunday afternoon. We ordered the brisket/sausage plate with its 2 sides. After waiting 20 minutes for our meal, and fighting the flies as we sat. Our portion (brisket) if you want to call it that, was more fat than meat. By the time all the fat was cut out, I was left 2with 2 bite sizes. The sausage was dry,I had ordered baked beans, turns out to be pork and beans out of the can. While waiting for our meal to be served, my eyes landed on the drinks tray, if you want tea refills- it will cost you 35cents. Wow....did I mention it comes with flies...free. We won't be going back not for the price and large portions of fat and little meat...not worth it.

Shorter review: Great Meat, so-so sides, HORRIBLE SLOW service.

On the recommendation of this article, I stopped by to try it out. There was one table occupied and they were just being served their food when I ordered. No other customers. I ordered 1 pound of brisket, 1 pound ribs, large potato salad, large coleslaw. There were 3 people in the kitchen including the owner. It took 15 minutes for me to get this simple order. Meat was very good, potato salad ok, coleslaw AVOID it! I was looking for a BBQ place close by, but based on the service (a friend also went, and got the same slooowww service) I will not be returning.

I have known this man for over 5 years . Being a former long haul truck driver I know a little something about all the places mentioned in the comments . Best pork chop goes to Coopers BBQ , Best sausage and bbq sauce ,Luling City Mkt. , Best beef ribs , Blacks in Lockhart , . Now I have eaten the brisket in all of these places , but Ed can put them to shame with his brisket ans pork ribs . Until you try it don't knock it. Now best all around for complete bbq is Snow's in Lexington,Tx. Not to many places can brag about opening just on Saturdays and shutting down by lunchtime because they ran out of meat by then .

Elgin (Southside market) for the sausage, Lockhart (Kreutz) for the brisket or sausage, Llano (Cooper's or now in New Braunfels too) if you have to have sides, but I have to say the Rudy's off 360 in Austin has got the best juiciest BBQ and coldest beer (even though a chain, other Rudy's if desperate) - road trip!

Luling City Market is worth the trip. Nothing here in town comes close. Great tasting sausage, can't find it here either. B** Miller has really gone down the tubes, I remember growing up in the 80's, the size of the poorboy's were bigger, and the portion of fries was much bigger, as well. Now the fries are soggy, and they use the the brownie sized container for the fries now. Is it just me who notices this??

Rudy,s has all ways been a disappointment every time I went there . Me and mama need to get out to Harmon's and check it out I have heard good things about it in the past. And yes Bun & barrel makes a killer BBQ brisket on a bun.
