Is your loved one forgetful? Maybe Mom or Dad doesn’t seem as sharp these days. Maybe Grandpa has trouble with directions or Grandma doesn’t seem to have the vocabulary she used to. When is this “simple memory loss” something to worry about?
Alzheimer’s disease is a slowly progressive illness that affects 4 million adults in the United States. It is expected that in the next 20 years, this will increase to approximately 15-20 million. Alzheimer’s often starts with what appears to be simple memory loss, forgetfulness, or word-finding difficulties. It progresses to getting lost in familiar places, increased inactivity and giving up beloved hobbies. Eventually, a person suffering from Alzheimer’s disease will be unable to balance a checkbook, read, drive, and perform multi-task activities. This disease greatly affects a person’s judgment and emotions. At the worst stages, a person with this illness will need constant supervision and help with grooming and eating.
There are some medications that slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. These include donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), and memantadine (Namenda). However, these medications do not yet offer a cure. There is much research being done to understand Alzheimer’s disease and offer new treatment options. Clinical Trials of Texas, a WOAI Local Expert, is conducting a new research study for Alzheimer’s Disease.
