SAN ANTONIO - When remodeling the interior of your home, the list of style possibilities can be endless. Here are three general style categories: contemporary, traditional and transitional.
Contemporary style is readily gaining popularity. There is a strong emphasis on line and form. A mixture of high gloss and matte finishes in masculine colors are used in materials and finishes. Chrome, steel, lacquer, glass and plastic are common materials used in these types of spaces. Textures such as ribbed glass and brushed steel add interest to the space. Furnishings have clean lines with strong profiles. It might be arranged in a sparse fashion, contributing to the minimalist mind set. Open space is important to keep the room airy. Windows are usually left undressed to allow as much natural light to filter in as possible. If privacy is an issue, no fuss window treatments might be used. Hanging large artwork makes a bold statement. Colors are usually neutral and accented with other vibrant hues.
Traditional style is used by most homeowners. It has classical elements and is often warm, comfortable and predictable. Furniture typically matches or has the same finish. Fabrics consist of solids, floral, muted plaids, stripes or tone-on-tone patterns. Traditional rooms are not vibrant or gaudy, but reserved. Upholstered furniture features classical lines with soft edges. There is a mixture of vertical and horizontal lines, all balanced by soft curves. Mid-range colors are incorporated with the rest of the details. Things tend to be laid out in a symmetrical pattern. Crown molding adds a formal look.
For homeowners looking to push past traditional design, but are not yet ready to make a full commitment to the bold, sleek lines of and contemporary design, then transitional style might be the key. Also known as “updated classic” or “transitional with a twist” is the mixture of contemporary and traditional elements. Lines are classic and clean. It is less stuffy and balances both the masculine with the feminine. In order to keep the space simple, there is a lack of ornamentation. Wood finishes can range from natural to high-gloss. There is a mixture of prints and solids used for upholstery.
