Debbie emailed in a common question, “Lately I have been having to dust my home twice a day. Someone told me that its because my air conditioning unit. They said I need to have my A/C cleaned. Is this true? If so, what exactly needs to be cleaned?”
Typically, the central HVAC system in a home is incapable of producing "dust." It does, however, do a very good job of circulating existing dust throughout the home. Depending on the system design, there is a possibility that the duct system is "open" to the atmosphere, most likely in the attic, and is drawing in air (and dust) from the attic.
This would also harm the system's efficiency. Air conditioning ducts can become contaminated with dirt, dust and sometimes mold, but cleaning the system, which can be expensive, only treats the symptom. The source of the dust should be uncovered and repaired or re-designed.
Our company can provide answers to your problem. One of our N.A.T.E. certified service or sales advisors can come to your home (no obligation to purchase anything) and assess the situation. This can be at no charge to you.
Something to look for… be sure that the discharge vent for your clothes dryer is clear. If the outlet to the vent is accessible, turn the dryer on and see if the air is coming out full force. If it is not, you may need to clean or replace that vent. You see, if the dryer vent is clogged or has become disconnected from the dyer, all that dust will enter the home.
Regardless, if an inordinate amount of dust is entering the home, it has passed though the AC system, and some of it is still in the system.
First step, find out where the dust is coming from and fix it. Second step, be sure the A/C system, especially the evaporator coil, is clean.
