Officer hit by suspected drunk driver loses leg

A San Marcos police officer since she was hit by a suspected drunk driver over the weekend, has now lost her right leg.

Officer Claudia Cormier was hit on Saturday while she was responding to a traffic hazard along I-35. Cormier, a three-year police officer, was rushed to Seton-Hays in Kyle where she underwent several emergency surgeries. She is currently in stable condition, but did lose her right leg, which was severed just above the knee.

In a press conference on Tuesday, San Marcos Police Chief Chase Stapp described Cormier as driven and courageous. She is currently surrounded by friends and family in the hospital.

“She has a long road ahead of her. This is a very devastating injury. But Claudia is a fighter,” said Stapp. “She’s probably one of the most driven individuals I know.”
