SAN ANTONIO - The much-anticipated “Cash for Clunkers” program has launched. The program allows you to trade in your old car and get $4500 dollars towards the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

The program is designed to cut the number of gas guzzlers on the road and boost auto sales. The program will last through November.

To take advantage, your car must meet the following requirements…

  • It must have a fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon.
  • Be in drivable condition with proof you owned it at least one year.
  • The new car must be more fuel efficient than the clunker - by at least four miles per gallon for cars and two miles per gallon for SUVS.

If you use this program, your old car will not be resold. It will be scrapped and crushed.

To find out more about the program, go to cars.gov or call 1-866-CAR-7891.

Now, there are scammers out there trying to take advantage of this program. The government is warning consumers to be wary of unofficial "cash for clunkers" Websites that seek personal information or direct consumers to pre-register for the program. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says dealers and consumers do not need to pre-register for the program.

NOBAMA is out to destroy, not improve. If you earn your money, he wants it! This welfare country, with so many livng off the fat of the land brought by hard honest people, needs a real change. If you cease welfare food stamps an any other hand out program, we could save billions of dollars! which in turn would make your dollar worth more which in turn will improve the economy as well as improve people. Get rid of the lazy people, they wont be near as overweight, more productive an less envialble!

The government incentive to buy isn't high enough to overcome consumer reluctance to add a big chunk of new debt to their pile of existing debts. People are still too concerned about keeping their job and saving money to cover the possibility of them losing their job to jump on a government offer that involves buying a new car. Nice idea but I think the public interest in this program will be lukewarm at best.

I wonder just how well that program will work in Texas, with so many of its citizens, find SUVs and pickups as suitable for their perceived needs? Not everyone will opt for a hybrid because it will nor carry all the kids and groceries as well, or double as a work vehicle. This in addition to the $10 to $15 thousand extra in price for a hybrid. Even at today's fuel prices, it will take a very long time for a payback. A simple answer would be to build more nuke plants, and open up drilling in the Gulf, Alaska, and other domestic locations. We would see the economy rebounding like never before if this were to take effect, plus remove much of the middle east finances which support out nation's enemies.

There's a lady I know who traded in her car for a Prius, and was rather proud of the fact that she now gets 45 mpg with it. Being the way I am, I accidentally volunteered that my car gets 25 mpg, but it's paid for, and I know how to work on it myself. She was visibly depressed after I said that. Oops. I think this is nothing more than a con to seperate people from their money. Think about it. People go out and buy new cars, the auto industry improves, and then the government gets paid back on its loans. It's like a tax, but only for people stupid enough to fall for the trick.
