SAN ANTONIO – About 250 workers at Boeing’s Port San Antonio facility are due to receive layoff notices in the coming days.

On Tuesday, Boeing announced employees tied to the KC-10 aerial refueling aircraft’s operations will be off the project by late January.

Boeing spokesperson Deborah Van Nierop says the company lost the servicing contract after it was underbid by Northrop Grumman. Boeing had serviced the aircraft for the last ten years.

The Boeing Company says it will try to find new positions within the organization for some of the people expected to be terminated here. However, some employees may have to relocate.

Company officials hold out hope that a recent court ruling in its favor regarding the KC-135 tanker could mean some new jobs for those impacted by the layoffs. Locally, Boeing had been working on the plane in the interim, but now says the workload could increase requiring more people as it ramps up services here.

They are around 1800 people employed by Boeing in San Antonio according to the company.
